Pediatrics Q & A

What is pediatrics?

Pediatrics is a branch of medicine focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing illness in infants, children, and teenagers. Pediatric experts, like Debra, monitor your child’s health and development, providing preventive care like vaccinations and general health advice.

Scheduling regular pediatric appointments for your son or daughter is one of the easiest ways to preserve their health. It also presents an opportunity to ask questions and discuss unusual symptoms or concerns with a qualified provider.

What services does pediatrics include?

At Access2care, Debra offers a wide range of pediatric services, including:

Wellness exams

A wellness exam is a preventive measure used to check in on your child’s health and well-being. During a wellness exam, Debra conducts a physical and neurological exam, reviews your child’s medical history, and asks you about their lifestyle, including their diet, sleep habits, and energy levels.

Immunizations protect your child from potentially life-threatening illnesses, including chickenpox, measles, and the mumps. Vaccinations are safe and present few side-effects. They’re one of the easiest ways to protect your child, their classmates, and your family.

Sports physicals

A sports physical is a physical exam designed to ensure your child is healthy enough to play sports. Most schools and youth sports leagues require players to undergo a sports physical at the beginning of each athletic season. During a sports physical, Debra tests your child’s reflexes, heart rate, posture, and range-of-motion. She also provides injury prevention tips, like how to warm up and cool down safely.

Laboratory testing

Laboratory testing refers to diagnostic procedures like blood tests, urinalysis, and stool samples. If Debra is unable to make a diagnosis based on just a physical exam, she might recommend laboratory testing, such as a complete blood count (CBC) or a glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test. Lab testing can rule out potential health problems like diabetes, thyroid disease, or high cholesterol.

Minor surgery

If your son or daughter experiences a laceration as a result of playing sports or falling on the playground, Debra can provide stitches. She and the team at Access2care, also offer wart removal, skin tag removal, and biopsies.

How often should I schedule pediatrics appointments?

The frequency at which you need to schedule pediatric appointments depends on your child’s age and overall health. For example, children between the ages of one and three usually need to visit a pediatrician every three to six months. Older children and teenagers only need to visit the pediatrician once a year or whenever they experience unusual symptoms.

Following an exam and review of your child’s medical history, Debra can develop a treatment schedule that aligns with your son or daughter’s individual needs.
