Immunizations Q & A

What are immunizations?

Immunizations play a vital role in primary prevention. They expose your immune system to harmful pathogens and “teach” your body to recognize and eliminate them.

When you receive an immunization, it stimulates your body to make antibodies. These antibodies train your immune system to respond more quickly if you get sick in the future.

Are immunizations safe?

Immunizations are safe and well-tolerated. Before a vaccine makes its way to the general public, it undergoes years of scientific testing by regulatory bodies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Some immunizations cause side-effects, but these side-effects are rare and mild. Any side-effects you experience following vaccination are much less dangerous than the risk you pose to yourself and the community if you avoid immunizations altogether.

Which immunizations do I need?

Only a qualified medical professional like Debra can determine which immunizations you need. During your first appointment, Debra conducts a physical exam and reviews your medical history. She uses this information to develop a custom immunization schedule.

Children and adolescents require more routine immunizations than adults. Many schools and youth organizations require updated immunization records to enroll or participate. Debra can work with you to ensure your child has all of the necessary immunizations before the start of a new school year or athletic season.

What are some of the most common immunizations?

At Access2care, Debra offers vaccinations for infants, children, and adults. Some of the most commonly required immunizations are:

  • Hepatitis B
  • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis)
  • Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV)
  • Rotavirus
  • Chickenpox
  • Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Pneumonia vaccines

Debra also offers immunization for the annual flu. Getting a yearly flu shot is one of the easiest ways to protect your health and the health of your loved ones.

I’m pregnant, is it safe to get an immunization?

If you’re thinking about getting pregnant, or recently found out that you are, it’s important to schedule an immunization appointment at Access2care. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends all women receive an MMR vaccine before getting pregnant. During pregnancy, the CDC also recommends you get a whooping cough and flu vaccine.

Receiving these immunizations while pregnant protects you and supports the immune system of your growing baby. This can lower your child’s risk of serious diseases as well as pregnancy-related complications.
